Viva La Difference



One thing I do every morning before I even eat breakfast is check email. This morning I was greeted with an email that asked the following: If you don't like what I've written, what then are you seeking?

Being a modern morning person, I drink tea rather than coffee with breakfast, or maybe it’s my British heritage. In any case, shunning Joe Bean or Starbucks--like my acquisitions list--tends to be slightly unusual.

Right now I'm seeking New Adult. An example of New Adult might be Jon Ripslinger's Missing Pieces, but an even better example will be his soon-to-be-released novel, Who is Lori Darling. More of this!! We want more!

 I've been asked why unusual and who would read it? My answer? Different sells. Ask Hunger Games fans.   

Our readers enjoy our authors’ unique approaches and stories. I look to take on that which is different and not run-of-the mill reading. As an example, we recently published Ruthie Toombs' Feeding the Need and Outrun the Dark. Ruthie writes women's fiction that examines the depths of human emotion, emotions many writers shy away from. She puts her own voice into it as well, and the subtexts of her stories are engaging, if not odd. The issues she addresses, such as sex addiction, are not typical, but they’re timely and compelling. We want more of this!!

I've been told that pure science fiction is dead. Really?  Probably someone should tell Barry Kirwan. Hey, Barry! Have you heard science fiction is dead? “No,” he laughs on his way to the bank. Barry writes different science fiction—space opera. His first novel, Eden Paradox, has done very well. So well, in fact, that we want more—much, much more, please!!

So I’d say that my choice of tea over coffee is sort of different. Wouldn’t you agree? With everyone else jumping on the coffee bandwagon, making tea a breakfast choice is not run-of-the-mill. This is what I and my fellow acquisitions editors mean when we say we’ve looking for something different, something that stands out in an overly crowded marketplace. Have you written this?
